In a back-and-forth battle, the Valley Jr Warriors 97 Elites defeated the Washington Little Capitals in an exciting 6-4 championship showdown at the 2009 Warrior National Showcase.
The Little Capitals jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when John Litscher registered an unassisted tally less than two minutes into the contest. The Warriors quickly responded with a goal by Denis Bouzon. Cam Askew would score two straight goals for the Warriors to keep pace with an explosive Little Capitals offense. Washington took a 4-3 lead with just over nine minutes remaining in regulation thanks to a goal by Cameron Smith. The Warriors had an answer as they went on to post three unanswered goals for the victory. Jake McKenelley, Garrett Pietz and Bouzon all scored in that deciding third period.
Ture Linden scored in the second period and John Litscher netted one in the third period to lift the Washington Little Capitals to a 2-0 win over the Boston Jr Eagles in Haverhill. The team teams were deadlocked through nearly one and a half periods when Linden, assisted by Greg Printz, lit the lamp for the 1-0 lead. The two teams battled back and forth until Litscher sealed the win by scoring early in the third period. The Eagles desperately tried to respond, but netminder Garrett Forrest held strong as he successfully backstopped the Little Capitals to the championship game.
The Washington Little Capitals will face off against the Valley Jr Warriors Elites, winners of the second semifinal contest. The Warriors prevailed by a score of 5-1 over the Rhode Island Saints. The difference in that game was a four-goal second period. Garrett Pietz came through with a hat trick, while Ryan McDonough scored twice and Zach Mirageas collected three assists for the Warriors. Colton King was the lone scorer for the Saints.
