Warriors Knock Off South Shore in Season Opener
The Jr Warriors made a strong statement to the Eastern Junior Hockey League in their opening contest against the South Shore Kings. After falling behind 2-0 through two periods, Head Coach Andy Heinze's team battled back with five unanswered third-period goals to score an impressive 5-2 win.  Garrett Tinkham finished with 29 saves, while Chris Wyman, Mike Gilberg, Kyle Haines (2) and Vin Stratte all scored for the Warriors.

The first period looked to be all South Shore, as the Kings put heavy pressure on netminder Garrett Tinkham, who was able to keep the game scoreless. Sean Logue, however, found a hole in Tinkham’s armor 9:41 into the game when Casey Terreri sent Dan Naurato along with Logue on a 2-on-1. Naurato hit Logue with a pass, and he shot it past Tinkham.

South Shore extended its lead to 2-0 late in the second when Naurato picked up a loose puck near the Kings’ blue line and sent it across the ice to Sean Logue. Logue skated in and executed a perfect 2-on-1, dishing the puck to Shawn Tingley, who redirected it into the net.

Despite having their backs against the wall trailing 2-0 after two, Valley Kyle_Haines.jpgcame out flying in the third. The Warriors peppered Dan Richards with shots, and were finally rewarded for their efforts five minutes into the period when Danny Wood rifled a shot from the circle and Chris Wyman stuffed home the rebound. Mike Gilberg tied the game with 9:57 left when he scored on Jon Dwyer’s rebound.

Kyle Haines scored the eventual game winner when he charged into the zone and ripped a shot at Kyle Richards. The buck bounded off of Richards’ chest and he was unable to cover it. Haines then swooped in and poked it past the sprawled goaltender for a shorthanded goal.

The Kings never recovered, and once Valley seized momentum, and with 3:20 remaining, Vin Tinkham_Garrett.gifStratte was in the right place at the right time. Danny Wood fired a shot that slid along the goal line, and Stratte was able to one-time it past Richards to extend the lead to 4-2.

The Kings pulled Richards for an extra attacker, but a late penalty forced him back onto the ice. With the man advantage, Wood and Stratte set up a passing play that drew Richards out to the right side, and Kyle Haines sealed the victory with eighteen seconds remaining. Richards made 31 saves in the contest.

The teams return to action in the Junior Bruins Shootout in Marlboro, MA on Friday.
