The Saint Anselm men’s hockey team is in a heated ECAC East Division battle and it can thank three former Valley Jr Warrior players for its solid performance thus far.
Mark Meads (Middleton, MA), Nick Leonard (Methuen, MA) and Johnny Daniels (Andover, MA) are former VJW standouts who are now key cogs in the Hawks offense. All three players have competed in all 10 games for the Hawks this season.
This past week, Leonard (shown top right) received high praise for scoring a goal and an assist in Saint Anselm’s 5-1 victory over Franklin Pierce at Sullivan Arena. In 10 games this season, Leonard ranks third overall in team scoring.
Leonard was part of Warrior program – as a peewee - from 2004-06 and then returned to the program to compete for Andy Heinze’s Junior A team during the 2012-13 season before committing to Saint Anselm.
Prior to his time with the Junior A team, Leonard was a star for Brewster Academy with 22-14-36 in 24 games and a four-year standout for Central Catholic High School where he tallied more than 100 career points.
Topping Leonard’s team this year in scoring, however, with 9 points – including a team-high five goals – is Daniels (shown top left). A senior forward for the Hawks, Daniels was last year named to the All-Northeast-10 Second Team and the All-ECAC East Second Team.
During that stellar 2013-14 season, Daniels led the Northeast-10 Conference in shots and scored 10 goals, which ranked No. 5 in the league. Much like Leonard, Daniels has been connected with the Warrior program since 2004!
The VJW trio was made complete when Meads transferred from Bentley University to Saint Anselm. In his first season with the Hawks, Meads made his presence felt immediately as he appeared in 20 games and combined for six points in the 2013-14 campaign, with three goals and three assists. He ened the season with a plus/minus of +6.
Leonard, Daniels, Meads and the entire Hawks team return to action Friday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. when they play host to SUNY Potsdam at Thomas F. Sullivan Arena.
Congratulations to all three VJW alumni on a great season thus far!
