The Valley Junior Warriors program is pleased to announce that eight of its players from the 2007-08 season – Brian Albert, Pat Beckwith, Mike Doherty, Mike Fransen, Jordan Gauvin, Josh Weiner, Matt Whitney and Chris Wyman – have been accepted to top collegiate establishments.

Although their contributions to the VJW program will be missed, these players are excited to face the next challenge in their lives… to become outstanding student athletes.

Brian Albert - Redlands CA
The 5-11, 185-pound Albert finished fourth in scoring this season after posting seven goals and 31 assists in 43 games. A consistent contributor, Albert registered a season-high three points on two separate occasions. Back in October, Albert scored one and assisted on two others to lead his team to a 4-1 win over the Huskies. He also netted three assists in a 5-1 victory against Apple Core one month later. Albert was also one of only four Warriors players to represent the team at the Annual EJHL All Star Classic. The Redlands (CA) resident – along with teammate Chris Wyman – will be taking his game to UMass-Boston where he will join 2006-07 VJW alumni John Galivan (Oak Park, IL).

Pat Beckwith - Winthrop MA
A mainstay on the Warriors blueline, Beckwith played in 42 games. His lone assist of the season came on October 5 against Bridgewater.  Beckwith, who hails from Winthrop (MA), is headed for Springfield to attend American International College.

Mike Doherty - Lynnfield MA
Doherty, the team’s third leading scorer, can next be seen wearing a Colby College jersey. The 6-0, 185-pound Lynnfield resident scored nine goals and added 29 assists in 42 games. Showing his maturity as the year progressed, Doherty capped off his Warriors season with a four-game scoring streak that included a four-assist night posted in an 8-7 victory over the Green Mountain Glades on February 17. Even more impressive was the fact that he scored in 16 of the team’s final 19 games of the season!

Mike Fransen - Burtonsville, MD
Although small in stature, Fransen played big for the Warriors and will now take his game to Lebanon Valley College. In the team’s season-ending loss to the Huskies, the 5-7, 170-pound Fransen scored the Warriors final goal of the game late in the third period.  He finished the season with two goals and four assists.

Jordan Gauvin - Stratham NH
Gauvin was another player who waited until the waning games of the season to show his offensive prowess. A strong all-around player, the Stratham (NH) resident netted one goal and one assist in the team’s 6-4 win at Capital District on February 18. He then added an assist in his team’s season-ending loss to the New England Huskies. Gauvin will head to the Empire State this fall to attend SUNY Cortland.

Josh Weiner - Rockville MD
Weiner, one of the team’s most reliable defensemen, quickly established himself as a superior set-up man as he collected 13 assists in 41 games this past season. Four of those assists came in his team’s final six games. Weiner will look to make a similar impact on the Elmira College squad.

Matt Whitney - Shrewsbury MA
Whitney made his presence felt in his 10 games as a starting netminder. In his EJHL debut back in early January, for example, he played in three games between the pipes and allowed just four goals on 83 shots. As a result of his performance, Whitney earned EJHL Rookie of the Week honors. The 6-2, 170 pound goalie finished the season with a 3-5-1 record, 3.58 goals against average and .888 save percentage. He will next backstop for the Bentley College Falcons.

Chris Wyman – Bartlett, IL
There is simply no question who led the Warriors offensively this season. Wyman was tops on his team and finished eighth overall in the EJHL with 23 goals and 31 assists in 44 games. He also posted a team-high 14 power-play tallies. On two occasions, Wyman was pegged for EJHL honors. Back in December, Wyman was named the EJHL Player of the Week after registering one goal and four assists in a weekend series against the New England Huskies and Boston Junior Shamrocks. Later in the year, Wyman once again earned league recognition as he scored three goals and two assists in a weekend split against the Junior Bruins and Boston Shamrocks. In recognition of his performance, Wyman earned the right to call himself the EJHL Offensive Player of the Week. Wyman was one of four VJW players to headline the Annual EJHL All Star Classic. Wyman will join Brian Albert at UMass-Boston next season.

Congratulations to all these VJW players. We wish you the best of luck next season.
